What Constitutes a Dead Tree?

Published June 6, 2005

One of the most controversial aspects discussed on many golf courses is the topic of tree removal. This willow tree is located along the pond next to #7 tee (there are about a half dozen declining Willows along the ponds). It's about 50% dead or I guess one could say it's 50% alive. In either case it's not long for this world and is constantly shedding debris creating an unsightly mess, it has no esthetic value and does not impact play. Should it be removed? What do you think? "Over the last 45 years, the biggest change I've noticed is that the conditioning of golf courses is so much better today. The one place everybody enjoyed going to so much was Augusta because it was always immaculate. But today, you have those impeccable conditions everywhere."
Arnold Palmer, Golf Magazine, April 2004
