Turf Disease Runs Rampant

Published May 19, 2006

With the recent rains and the cool temperatures, the conditions have been perfect for the development of cool season turf diseases. In this case the disease in question is a form of Pink Snow Mold or Microdochium Patch. In the photo above you can see an old infection center that was reconstituted by the recent weather. The bad part of the disease during this time of year is the fact that it tracks or spreads very easily. As we get additional rainfall not only does the disease multiply but it is also being spread by water movement. As the photo clearly shows, the new infection areas are in direct correlation to the direction the water is moving.

The areas affected pretty much include greens, tees and fairways. There's just too much disease so it looks like we're going to have treat for it.

"The golf architect is not at all concerned with chastising bad play. On the contrary, it is his business to arrange the field of play as to stimulate interest, and hence, the province of hazards is to chasten the too ambitious."
Max Behr
