Tools of the Trade

During a dry year we must rely totally on the irrigation system to supply the water the grass needs to survive. Just as important, is the need to make sure the sprinklers supplying that water are operating properly. As our sprinklers are just about twenty years old, they are long overdue for replacement. Unfortunately, new sprinkler heads are not in the stars at this time so we'll have to make due. We've had many winter frost cycles in the last twenty years and many of the sprinkler heads are sunken or out of level as a result. Usually very labor intensive, re-leveling sprinkler heads is very time consuming to say the least and we've been putting it off for too long. Just recently a new product was being advertised to do exactly what we needed --level sprinkler heads with greater ease--. As soon as I saw the advertisement, I knew I had to have one of those new sprinkler head leveling gadgets but my hopes were shattered once I inquired about the price. The concept is simple. Inject water to loosen the soil and then use leverage of some sort to raise the sprinkler head. Using parts and pieces that were laying around the shop we were able to put together a device that works surprisingly well.

"Golf courses. The conditions of the golf courses. I think that's the largest improvement I've seen over the years, without getting into the equipment part of it. Superintendents have done marvelous jobs getting these golf courses in shape to play tournament golf and for everyday golfers."
