Sneek Peek
Published March 1, 2007

With the recent warmer temperatures, just enough snow melted in a few places to allow me to take a little peek to see what's going on under the snow. The two major concerns this time of year are "winter kill" and snow mold.
Snow mold is pretty much a given in the untreated areas but to what extent is the question. It's hard to come to a conclusion based on the inspection of a small area so I'll have to wait until we have a more significant melt. "Winter kill" on the other hand, is much less predictable as there are many different reasons why turf loss could occur during the winter months. So far, the general consensus among those in the "Turf World" leans toward little to no concern for injury thus far. As we approach the critical transition period from winter into spring the occurrence of wide temperature extremes (cold to warm, warm to cold) is more likely, increasing the chance for winter injury. At this point I am optimistic but it's always good to keep your fingers crossed.

"If a hole does not possess a striking individuality through some gift of nature, it must be given as much as possible artifically and the artifice must be introduced in so subtle a manner as to make it seem natural."
