What happened here?

After the 18th hole during one of the Monday events, the players were directed to the putting green to participate in a putting contest. This was a large event and each player was to make a putt from a certain spot. The dead turf you see in the photo is the result of the wear from all of the players repeatedly putting from the exact same spot.
