Continuing Education in February
Published February 27, 2007
Earlier this month I had the opportunity to attend the Golf Industry Conference and Show in Anaheim, California. Packed full of education and the latest and greatest in turf equipment and golf course accessories, I was able to participate in several educational seminars as well as dream about getting some of the new equipment that was displayed.
On my agenda were classes on; Planning an Irrigation Renovation, Watershed Management for Golf Courses and Fertility Management for Northern Golf Courses among others. One of the highlights of the conference was the opening session which included appearances by Golf Commentator Johnny Miller, and Pat Croce, former NBA team owner.

Croce, to say the least, was an inspirational speaker bounding with energy. Croce believes passionately in an individual's power to achieve success by "expecting the best." "Unleash the power of your soul," he advised. "Everything seems impossible -- before it works." I think that's a message I'll take to heart. To see a portion of his performance click here.

Just as interesting, Miller shared some of his experiences on the PGA tour as well as interesting takes on the various swings of some of the more famous tour pros. Click here for video.
The conference is a really great opportunity to network with other superintendents and share ideas in regard to managing our golf courses. There's always a wealth of timely information that we will be able to implement as we approach the new golfing season just a few weeks away.

"American architecture allows practically no option as to where the drive shall go. Now, let me ask you what manner of golfer will be developed by courses of this nature? The answer is a mechanical shot producer with little initiative and less judgment, and ability only to play the shot as prescribed."
